Then something remarkable. She walked to the side and started doing something. Only later when I returned home, did I realize she was repairing her web.

Inspecting

Hopping over - and you can see the superstructure that overlays the spiral web

Here it appears that she is increasing the tension to pull the edge of the web away from the center
