April 1, 2007: Orange spider behavior

This is a continuation of yesterday's story. I was intrigued by what appeared to be harvesting dew and taking a drink. Here are two of these little orange spiders

The acrobatic positions are a wonder to watch. Note the droplet on the side of her abdomen

Now she is pulling the right strand closer to her - her leg is bent suggesting that she is pulling this strand closer to her

Now you can see how the dew droplets are arranged and it appears she is passing the strand through her mouth

Here, I think, is a dew droplet in her mouth

This drop is too big. It looks like she is pulling a small droplet from the large drop

This was about 5 sec later - note that the leg that was pulling the droplet is now in her mouth - while the drop hangs from her other leg

Now she has finished drinking and the leg removed from her mouth

Then about 20 sec later - she is extracting another droplet

Here is another view

Later she was just showing off - some acrobatic positions

Here I think she is harvesting some small dew droplets and holding one in her front whatevers. Note the thin strand of silk projecting from her spinneret - and held by her left rear leg

More acrobatics
