After scouting out the situation in Bangkok using the Asia Airport Hotel
as home base (it was terrific) and learning how to use the Sky Train (BTS)
- I moved on to Chennai visiting
Raj and his family at CTRM,
colleagues at IIT (Indian Institute of Technology), my "family" from 1993-94
when I was teaching there and Raj and Dr. Benjamin. Here are a few
photos of Kalyana Krishnan, of the IIT Computer Science Dept, R.S. Reddy,
Radhakrishnan, my
colleague in Biomedical Engineering where we explored a number of ongoing
projects with web-based distance education, biomedical signal processing etc.
First, traffic in Madras (Chennai) is pure chaos. There are only two
traffic rules: 1) don't hit what is in front of you and 2) don't think about
what is happening behind you. Here is a typical view of all modes of
transport - bicycles, cars, autorickshaws and motorcycles.
Meanwhile, here is Raj, his wife, Vanitha and our inspiration, Dr. Elsa
Benjamin
Raj, Vanitha and the sewing class and Dr. Benjamin - a special friend
Sujata and Sheela and below, Krishnan and Raj deep in conversation,
Reddy and Radhakrishnan at IIT
In addition, I visited my "family" Suseela and her two daughters, Radha and
Devi. Devi is getting married on Jan 25, 2002 and so it was essential to
visit and look at the bride-to-be and her sister, Radha:
India is full of surprises. Traveling to Valathi, we encoutered this
road side repair, in progress.
